Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks is a U.S. city located in Ventura County, California and forms one of the most populated areas of a region known as Conejo Valley. Named after the prevalence of oak trees in the area, Thousand Oaks was once occupied by the Chumash Indians and is now home to approximately 130,000 people and expands over an area of 55.2 square miles with less than 1% of water. The median home price is around $673,000 and is one of the most desirable places to live, featuring a year-round Mediterranean climate with warm summers and rainy winters and an elevation ranging from 500 to 900 feet.
Thousand Oaks is unlike most cities in that its council members take turns occupying the office of mayor, rather than by electoral vote. Housing prices have risen in part due to Thousand Oaks slow growth mindset, boasting 15,000 acres under preservation as open space. The city’s employment sector is composed of a range of business types, including automotive, electronics, healthcare, telecommunications, finance, and biotechnology. The Thousand Oaks Library system is among the state’s best. Thousand Oaks is also home to many well-known actors and actresses including Kurt Russel, Megan Fox, Mariel Hemingway, Tahj Mowry, Frankie Vallie, and Will Smith.
Simi Valley
The city of Simi Valley is nestled in the valley of the same name within Ventura County. Simi Valley is surrounded by the Santa Susana Mountain range and Simi Hills and is largely a commuter bedroom community, composed of large housing tracts and housing the some of the workforce of Los Angeles and cities in Ventura County. The city features an area of 42.4 square miles with an elevation ranging between 700 and 1000 feet and a population of approximately 125,000. The city is often the location for many Hollywood films and is one of the safest cities in the country.
Simi Valley is home to two California Landmarks as well as a major library. Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village is a small “village” of sorts begun in 1956 by 59 year old Tressa Prisbrey. The village structures are comprised of tiles, shells, doorknobs, car ornaments, dishware, toys, and other items all rescued from the local dump. Rancho Simi, a 113,000 acre land grant, is the site of Spanish Rancho San Jose de Nuestra Senora y Simi. The famous Ronald Reagan library is also housed in Simi Valley is the site of the titular president’s grave, as well as his helicopter, the Marine One.
Moorpark
Named after the moorpark apricots that grow in the area, Moorpark is a fairly small city with a population of 34,421. The city features a university, Moorpark College, that offers a degree in Exotic Animal Training and Management Program. Moorpark was the first city in the United States to run off nuclear power, doing so from 1957 to 1964. The city has a total area of 12.8 square miles with 1.7% of it being water. Moorpark High School features an Academic Decathlon that has won the national championship four times from 1999 to 2008; the Moorpark High school football team has held a national record in losses, losing 51 consecutive times to Carpinteria High School. The city is serviced by Amtrak California’s Pacific Surfliner.
